A Joyful, Organized Home

A Joyful, Organized Home

Marie Kondo talks a lot about loving everything that surrounds you and letting go of the rest. This is a hard concept for a lot of people. It does, however, make life more joyful when your house and possessions reflect back joy and happiness. The key in this blog is to remind you to organize them thoughtfully so that your possessions actually bring more joy. The blog also reminds us to feel free of guilt in the process of letting go.

In other words, we do not want our environment to feel sterile, we want it to feel filled with joy and love. Not sparse but have the ability to appreciate what we do own. It’s wonderful to feel that what we have feels like abundance without excess. Look to The Uncluttered Life’s Declutter Deck® for tips and tricks about home organization.

Organization and Action Steps to Organize Your Home

Organization

  1. There is a place somewhere in between too much and too little. This is the sweet spot. In this place, your home both functions in a way that’s right for you, but doesn’t also overwhelm you with too much. Shopping for items should reflect your ethical standards as well as your physical ones. Toys that are made with toxic paint, for example, would not reflect ethical standards for a house with small children.

  2. Quality over quantity reduces waste and leads to an appreciation for the things you do own. Owning too many things detracts from this feeling.

  3. One way to look at purchases is to ask yourself if the item you purchase can serve multiple functions. This reduces the items you own.

  4. The best way to organize possessions is to be mindful about what will be utilized consistently and help your space to function better.

  5. Think about what you own in terms of categories. This helps to reduce waste because you know what you own in that particular category. This minimizes unnecessary purchases.

Action Steps

  1. Impulse purchases increase clutter. Try to resist impulse buys. And return what you do not need. Research brands and products to make sure they fit with your ethical standards.

  2. If you need to purchase a high-quality item, save for it gradually. This will increase appreciation for it and keep you within budget.

  3. Make a purchase if a product meets your ethical standards and also fits into your categories and aesthetics.

  4. Continuously audit what you own. Does the item still bring you joy? Does it have a purpose, and does it continue to be useful? If not, then it may be time to let go.

  5. Organizing goes beyond putting things away. Organizing also includes increasing functionality in your household.

  6. Aesthetics make a house a home. Start by choose a color scheme, as suggested in some of our other blogs, and layer in the furniture and decor. An interior designer may be able to help you with selection.
