Organization and Action Steps to Organize Your Craft Fabric Supplies

Working with fabric is a great craft and takes skill, but organization and storage of fabric can present issues. In this blog, we discuss the best way to store, organize and catalog your fabric so that you have everything you need at your fingertips. This blog goes along with some of our other craft blogs. Organization

  1. Clear, plastic storage containers work well when storing fabric. This is because you can see inside and don’t have color bleaching and leaching from the container onto your fabric.

  2. Cardboard boxes can be vulnerable to water damage and pests. This is not a good choice when storing fabric.

  3. Visual storage means that you don’t have to dig through each bin to locate what you need. It’s also easy to put away fabric in a visually appealing manner.

  4. If need be, make a table of contents with a fabric swatch, so you know exactly what you have and where you have stored it.

Action Steps

  1. Protect fabric in clear containers. Also, keep the fabric out of the sun. Store fabric in a closet, basement or attic.

  2. To protect fabric stored in cardboard boxes, drop a plastic bag inside. Put the fabric in it and seal it.

  3. If you are worried about sun damage when using visual storage, you can put a curtain in front of the fabric to protect it from sunlight.

  4. For storing fabrics 1/2 yard or less, fold them and store them by color.

  5. For larger fabrics, store them on comic book boards with plastic clips. If your shelf is not full, they will curve. To help avoid this problem, use blocks or bookends.

  6. Use catalog cards for extra large pieces of fabric. They are like index cards with a swatch of the fabric and information about the fabric written on it. Store the cards in index card boxes or in plastic envelopes. Adhere the fabric with water soluble glue or double-sided tape.
