The Reverse Hanger Trick: A Zero-Effort Way to Declutter Your Closet
If you feel like it is hard to let go of clothing items, even when you never actually wear them, you are not alone. Closet clutter is one of the most common sources of household stress. Fortunately, there is a no-effort decluttering method called the Reverse Hanger Trick that takes the guesswork and emotional struggle out of the process.
I use this method myself, and it tells me everything I need to know about my wardrobe without me having to do anything different in my daily routine. All it requires is turning your hangers backward. That’s it.
The beauty of this closet decluttering hack is that it gives you a clear window of time to make a decision. I usually recommend a six-month cycle. Why six months? Because that generally covers at least two seasons, giving you a fair chance to reach for your favorite pieces.
How the Reverse Hanger Trick Works
To get started, follow these simple steps:
Flip the Hangers: Take all the clothing currently hanging in your closet and turn the hangers so the "hook" part is facing toward you (backward).
Live Your Life: Every time you wear an item and return it to the closet, hang it back up the "normal" way, with the hook facing away from you.
Set a Reminder: Set a calendar alert on your phone for six months from today.
The Great Reveal: Once the six-month timer goes off, take a look at your closet. Any hanger that is still facing backward represents an item you have not touched in half a year.
Evaluating the Results
When the six months are up, you will have a visual map of your habits. Unless the item is for a very specific, rare occasion (like a tuxedo or a formal gown), the rule is simple: If you haven’t worn it in the last six months, you likely won’t wear it again.
This is the time to be honest with yourself. During certain periods, like the recent years where many stayed home more often, dressy clothing might have stayed reversed. That is okay. But for your everyday wardrobe, those backward hangers are a sign that it is time to donate.
When you decide to let an item go, do so with joy. Express gratitude for the service that piece of clothing provided you in the past, and acknowledge that its new purpose is to serve someone else in the future.
How to Donate, Consign, or Discard
Sometimes the hardest part of decluttering is physically getting the items out of your life. To prevent the "donation pile" from becoming a permanent fixture in your hallway, follow these steps:
Move it Immediately: Once you have gathered the clothes you are letting go of, move them to the trunk of your car right away.
Schedule a Pickup: If you don't have a car or the ability to drop items off, call a local charity for a clothing pickup.
Set a Deadline: Pick a specific date to drop the items off or have them collected, and do not deviate from it.
Once the items are out of the house, you will feel lighter and happier. You’ll have more space to breathe and the satisfaction of knowing your items are going to a better home.
The Joy of Giving: A True Story
In the Marie Kondo method of clutter clearing, the focus is on keeping only what brings us joy and surrounding ourselves with things we love. This is a powerful way to evaluate the objects in our lives by identifying which ones block our energy and which ones create a sense of flow.
My friend tells a wonderful story about the joy that comes from this process. She once shared her unused clothes with two sisters who worked in a shop next door to her. For the following year, she got to see her former shirts, pants, and sweaters being worn and appreciated by these women.
Instead of her clothing sitting in a dark closet and causing her to feel guilty for not wearing them, she felt happy and satisfied. Now, whenever she donates to local shelters, she is reminded of those two sisters and the life her belongings had after she let them go.
It turns a chore into an act of kindness, making it much easier to say goodbye to the things you no longer need.
